Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace), commonly known as La Paz, is the administrative centre and seat of government.
Just to reiterate: Sucre is the constitutional capital and the seat of the judiciary.
Antonio José de Sucre y Alcalá (1795–1830) was a Venezuelan general and politician, who served as the president of Bolivia from 1825 to 1828. As the "chief lieutenant" of Simón Bolívar, he was one of the primary leaders of South America's struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. He resigned the presidency and retired to Ecuador after a mutiny by the army and invasion by Peruvian forces, and was assassinated two years later while on his way home from the “Admirable Congress” in Bogotá – a last unsuccessful effort to maintain the unity of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. The assassins were rumoured to be agents of José María Obando, a Colombian soldier and opponent of Bolívar, but no proof was ever found.
The principal currency unit of Ecuador was also named after Sucre, but in the year 2000 it was replaced by the US dollar (with Ecuadorean centavo coins).
